Transition Team News Bulletin - July, 2009
August, 2009 - We are now into our self-study on Leadership and Decision-Making. For an overview of some of the issues to be considered, please click here.
Beware of sabotage! It is not uncommon during an interim period for people to deliberately or even unintentionally sabotage the work of a pastor and Transition Team. We must be aware of this and help prevent those attitudes, words, and actions that undermine and harm us if we expect a healthy outcome during any transition time. Read an excellent, but brief, article about sabotage in the church.
Our Transition Team is in place and working! Thank you for the continued prayer support. Team members are Bob Anderson, Nancy Ballesteros, Linda Bruschayt, Jack Fortes, Gary Meadows, Sharie Mesibov, Jim Mize, Nancy Hunt, Leticia Policke, Arlene Temple, Curt Voelbel, and Dot Whitehead. We are meeting each week as we study and prepare for the work ahead. We hope that all our members will be active in the occasional "Body Life" gatherings where we share in worship, prayer, and dialog. These specially scheduled times will usually take place in the Chapel or FLC on Sunday evenings. Stay tuned!
A word of appreciation is due our Selection Team which began to take shape back in February and has worked week in and week out for months to pray over and contact nominees to the Transition Team. Many of us don't realize the long hours, prayer, and contacts that these good people were involved with, but thanks to their tirelessness we now have our Transition Team. Thank you Jim Bradford, Ron Cantley, Al Guenther, Jim Kirstein, Dan Scott, Carol White, Chad Wilsky, and Pam Wilsky!
Our Transition Team usually meets on Sunday afternoons. They appreciate your prayers as they meet. When you have a question about what is going on, please feel free to ask one of our Team members. If he or she doesn't have the answer we'll do our best to find out!
In addition, the Team has spent many many hours meeting during the week to study thousands of survey responses and prepare the statistical analyses and summaries of each question or statement.
May 31 - Our "Body Life" gathering went so well! Thank you to the 106 church members who attended and shared with one another our deepest feelings, concerns, and hopes for our church. We learned much about who we are and where God desires us to be. Both of our worship services where evenly represented.
Fair of June 14! FBC members outdid themselves at the Ministry Fair. We had 150+ in attendance and 25 booths representing our church ministries. The purpose of the Fair was to exhibit our strength and ministry through service to one another and our community, help us get to know where others are active, and introduce every member to the rich opportunities available to us. The Fair also helps us define our true passions, when it comes to service.
Thank you to all our historical characters who visited from the “past” to remind us of our church’s history and community heritage. Thanks also to each table/booth representative who provided information on ways to get involved in the church body. People realized what is going on at FBC. Many met people they did not know. The fair would not have been complete if it wasn’t for the delicious drinks, popcorn, and chilidogs.
This Ministry Fair showed us where our hearts are as a community of believers and how we serve God in DeLand.
July 26 - "Body Life"! This gathering of the congregation allowed us to hear reports and summaries from our May 31 Body Life surveys and discussion regarding our history and ministry. We also enjoyed the time together to continue to build community and pray together as a congregation. We met from 6:00 - 7:30pm in the FLC. Light snacks were provided, and everyone was home before dark
August 30 - "Body Life"! We celebrated another Combined Worship Experience following 9:45am Sunday School! We met in the sanctuary at 11:00am, and afterward, enjoyed a potluck lunch in the FLC. Thanks to all who prepared enough for your family and a friend. At the conclusion of our meal we shared in Body Life as we explored Leadership and Decision-Making at First Baptist Church.
September 16 - "Body Life"! A little different format. We asked that our members fast and pray leading up to our Body Life which began at 5:30pm. For that reason, there was no meal at 5:00pm as many gathered for a concerted prayer time. Those who had to eat did so before arriving so they were able to participate in the evening's activities.
Following our time of concerted prayer, we remained around the tables to complete another survey. This one dealt more specifically with leadership at FBC. We were finished in time for everyone to get to their usual Wednesday night ministries.
September 27 - "Body Life"! Please join us for Combined Worship in FLC at 9:00am, Sunday School at 10:00am, and a Potluck Lunch & Body Life beginning at 11:00am. Come share with your family as our Transition Team shares the results of our Decision-Making Survey of August 30. It will be an informative presentation.
October 25 - "Body Life"! We will draw the Leadership and Decision-Making task to an end. We will have completed and studied more than 3,000 responses to a host of questions and statements touching on these subjects at FBC. In addition we will have been able to prepare some observations and recommendations that our church will consider as we move forward in ministry together. We will meet on Sunday afternoon, beginning around 1:00pm, following our Combined Worship and luncheon.
November 15 - Sweet Unity Fellowship Can you spell "Mmm Good"? You are asked to come take part in a sweet time of fellowship that includes some of the best tasting yummy desserts you can put together! Our congregation will gather in the FLC at 6:00pm to sample all of the wonderful treats and share in a time of fun. More details to follow.
November 18 - "Body Life"! Come share our buffet meal at 5:00pm on Wednesday the 18th, and then take part in our Body Life at 6:00pm to hear and discuss a Statement of Purpose (Vision for our future) and a Mission Statement about how we will accomplish our Purpose. We'll be finished in time for you to get to your other evening ministries.
